On Monday, 3 August 2026, the “Fiji Trade and Investment Seminar” was held in the International Conference Room, 11th Floor, Sasakawa Peace Foundation. The seminar was co-hosted by the Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Investment Fiji, and the Embassy of the Republic of Fiji in Japan, with the cooperation of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Pacific Islands Centre (PIC).
The seminar opened with remarks from Mr. Eiji Sakai, Executive Director of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, followed by welcome remarks from H.E. Kemueli Naiqama, Ambassador-designate, Embassy of the Republic of Fiji in Japan, special remarks from Hon. Fukushiro Nukaga, Member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Japan–Fiji Parliamentary Friendship League, and keynote remarks from Ambassador Filimone Waqabaca, Chief Executive Officer of the Fiji Development Bank (FDB) and Chairperson of the Investment Fiji Board — bringing together senior figures from both Fiji and Japan.
The programme began with a presentation by the Reserve Bank of Fiji on Fiji’s economic outlook, followed by an overview from Investment Fiji on the country’s investment climate and priority sectors, a session on trade and export opportunities, and a business testimonial from Fiji Time Japan, a company with hands-on experience importing Fijian products. Together, these sessions offered a multi-faceted look at the appeal of investing and trading with Fiji. A project update on the Lau Seascape Initiative was also presented, sharing efforts to balance environmental conservation with economic development.
Each session was followed by a lively question-and-answer period, during which questions and views exchanged with the audience deepened participants’ understanding of trade and investment opportunities in Fiji. Toward the close of the seminar, the Director of the Pacific Islands Centre (PIC) delivered partner remarks on strengthening business partnerships between Japan and the Pacific islands, followed by closing remarks from JETRO Headquarters in Tokyo. Following the seminar, participants gathered for a group photo, and the networking reception that followed provided a further opportunity for speakers and attendees to connect and exchange views.
Through this seminar, a meaningful platform for dialogue was created to further strengthen trade and investment ties between Fiji and Japan. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone involved for their cooperation.
