On August 23 (WED), the International Organization Pacific Islands Center will hold a seminar entitled “Pacific Islands Journey ~Kiribati~ for the first time in almost a year.
The Republic of Kiribati has a vast exclusive economic zone (EEZ), the third largest in the world, with 33 islands (atolls) scattered over a vast body of water. This vast EEZ is a treasure trove of fishery resources such as skipjack tuna. On the other hand, Kiribati’s economy was dependent on phosphate for about 70 years from around 1900, but this was depleted in 1979, and since Kiribati has few natural resources other than phosphate, its current exports include fish (especially tuna), copra, and sea salt, etc. The challenge is to strengthen the economic base.
In recent years, the country has attracted attention as a country affected by “climate change”.
In this online seminar, we will have a presentation from the Kiribati government on the attractiveness of Kiribati tourism, a presentation from JICA staff on their current projects and future challenges in Kiribati, and finally a talk on the efforts of Japanese companies from the perspective of labor mobility.
The outline of the seminar is as follows.
This will be the last in the “Pacific Island Journey” series of online seminars.
