Report: The First Online Study Session on Current Status and Issues in the Renewable Energy Sector of Pacific Island Countries

On Wednesday, October 13, PIC(International Organization Pacific Islands Centre)held the “The First Online Study Session on Current Status and Issues in the Renewable Energy Sector of Pacific Island Countries” (218 registered participants).

At the beginning of the session, Mr. Saito, Director of the PIC, gave an overview and challenges of the energy sector in the Pacific island countries in general and the explanation of future research followed by a presentation on actual situation of renewable energy in island countries by the Pacific Power Association. Four personnel from JICA(Japan International Cooperation Agency) talked about Japan/JICA’s assistance policy and specific assistance to the Pacific island countries.
During the question and answer session, the participants asked many questions and made many comments from various perspectives on renewable energy in island countries, which showed the growing interest of private companies and organizations.

Question and answer session (answers to questions that could not be answered on the day)
Please note that not all questions can be answered.

Question 1:
What are the sources of off-grid energy in Fiji? and how are they catered for Fijians?

Answer to question 1 (Mr. Abraham Simpson):
Diesel engines, Hybrid (diesel) & solar panels, Solar panels & batteries.

Question 2: Question to JICA:
I heard about Fiji that there is still a lot of off-grid power sharing, how are you dealing with the total power and energy sharing? Also, what is the source of off-grid energy?

Answer to question 2 (JICA):
There are two ways to supply off-grid energy, one is to supply individual facilities with stand-alone systems such as solar home systems, and the other is to supply multiple facilities with mini-grids. As for energy resources, the former is mainly solar power generation, and the latter is mainly diesel power generation, but hybrid power generation combined with solar power generation is increasing in recent years.
