On Tuesday 26 August 2025, PIC held the 8th seminar, “Tourism growing with Coral Reefs – Learning from Palau about forefront of sustainable tourism development” in the ‘Glocal Tourism Network” (hereinafter referred to as “the Network”).(Number of online registrants: 89, including 6 from Pacific Island countries)

In light of the upcoming launch of direct flights between Japan and Palau on October 29, speakers from Palau—long a subject of high interest among participants—were invited to this session.
- A marketing representative from the Palau Visitors Authority (PVA) shared the latest initiatives on sustainable tourism development, responsible tourism practices, and collaboration with local communities, in addition to providing updates on Palau’s tourism sector. - Ms. Ito from the Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC), a non-profit organization engaged in marine and coral reef research, education, and outreach, spoke about coral reef restoration efforts and experimental collaborations with the tourism industry. The seminar provided a valuable opportunity to learn from Palau’s pioneering efforts in balancing tourism and environmental conservation, and offered meaningful insights for further cooperation between Japan and Pacific Island countries.
