Meeting with Prime Minister James Marape of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea

On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. for approximately 30 minutes, PIC Director met with Hon. Mr. James Marape, Prime Minister of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, who was visiting Japan as a guest of honor at the 2025 Japan International Exposition (Osaka-Kansai Expo) and exchanged views on economic issues between Japan and Papua New Guinea.

At the outset, Prime Minister Marape expressed gratitude to Japan for its long-standing support as a “friend,” and emphasized that PIC’s role is becoming increasingly important as both countries strive to enhance their respective strengths in trade and investment sectors to achieve economic growth. Director Saito explained PIC’s activities and requested improvements to the barriers currently hindering Japanese business expansion. The Prime Minister also mentioned that he would make efforts in this regard, and both parties agreed to continue cooperation in the economic field.

Additionally, on the same evening, a reception hosted by the Papua New Guinea Ambassador to Japan was held, bringing together numerous Papua New Guinea officials, diplomatic representatives, and Japanese businesses and organizations. The event provided a vibrant platform for exchange across both public and private sectors, reaffirming the strong bonds and relationship between Japan and Papua New Guinea.
