On 10 June 2025, Assistant Professor Lincy Pendeverana, Associate Dean for Research, Faculty of Education and Humanities, Solomon Islands National University, was in Japan as a visiting researcher of Ritsumeikan University and visited PIC with Professor Hirono, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, College of Global Liberal Arts, Professor, Graduate School of International Relations, Ritsumeikan University.
Dr. Hirono and Dr. Lincy are conducting joint research on how foreign investment (including Chinese investment) in the Solomon Islands affects the country, particularly from the perspective of changes in the concept of land ownership, and analyzing the relationship between traditional communities and foreign investment through cases including gold mine development.
We had a wide-ranging exchange of views on the potential for foreign investment in Pacific Island countries in the future, particularly in the Solomon Islands, and on issues to be addressed when attracting investment. It was agreed that we would continue to share information on global trends in the field of investment and to cooperate in providing advice from an academic perspective to Japanese companies setting up business operations in the Solomon Islands.
