1996年10月1日に設立された当センター（PIC）は、今年設立25周年を迎えることになりました。また、奇しくも、今年は3年に1度の第9回太平洋・島サミットが初めてのオンラインで開催されました。そこで、四半世紀を迎えるのを区切りに、設立25周年記念誌を発刊して、太平洋島嶼国地域の首脳陣をはじめ関係者の方々にお配りして、ご覧頂くことと致しました。 一口に25年とは言うものの、設立後様々な出来事を経て、四半世紀という大きな節目を無事迎えることができましたのも、ひとえに、日本国政府・太平洋諸島フォーラム事務局をはじめ、当センター関係者の皆様方の長年のご支援の賜物であると、厚く御礼申し上げます。 25年の歩みを振り返る編集作業において、当センターの設立に関与された皆様方と接する中で、初源に立ち戻って、PICの立ち位置を踏みしめることが出来ました。そして、PICの設立目的である「太平洋島嶼国の持続可能な経済開発を支援する為に、日本と島嶼国間との貿易・投資・観光を促進する」ことを目指して、PICが率先して関係者の協力的な努力を促していくことの大切さを、改めて認識致しました。 この25年の間に太平洋島嶼国から日本への輸出額が3倍強に増加する等、日本と太平洋島嶼国間の経済的な結びつきは、着実に強くなって来ています。一方、島嶼国は、地球温暖化による海面上昇や海洋プラスチック等、グローバルな今日的課題の最前線にある中、先進的技術を手にする日本企業の課題解決力が期待される等、両者の協力関係は新たな局面を迎えています。 世界中に蔓延した新型コロナウイルスのワクチン接種が行き渡り始め、終息にむけた道筋が見えて来つつある今、PICはその後を見据えて、次の25年に向けて新たな一歩を踏み出そうとしています。そして、PICの原点を大切にしつつ、関係者の方々と連携して、日本と太平洋島嶼国地域間のビジネス拡大に向けた新たな取組みにチャレンジしていきたい思っています。 皆様方の引き続きのご支援を宜しくお願い致します。 Pacific Islands Centre (PIC), established on October 1, 1996, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Coincidentally, the 9th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting, which is held every three years, was held online for the first time in 2021. To mark the quarter of a century, we have published the 25th Anniversary Commemoration Book of PIC's foundation, which will be distributed to the leaders of the Pacific Islands Countries/Territories and other concerned parties for their perusal. Although 25 years is a long time to say, we have gone through many events since the establishment and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Government of Japan, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, and all those involved with PIC for their support making it possible for us to reach this quarter century milestone. In the editing process of looking back over the past 25 years, I was able to go back to the beginning and step into the position of PIC through contact with those who were involved in the establishment of the Centre. I also reaffirmed the importance of PIC in taking the lead to promote cooperative efforts among the parties concerned to achieve the PIC's founding objective: "to promote trade, investment and tourism between Japan and the Pacific Island Countries in order to support their sustainable economic development." The economic ties between Japan and the Pacific Island Countries have been steadily growing stronger, with tripled value of exports from the Pacific Island Countries to Japan during these 25 years. At the same time, the Pacific Island Countries are at the forefront of today's global issues, such as rising sea levels due to global warming and marine plastics, and Japanese companies with advanced technologies are expected to support solve these problems. Now that vaccination against COVID-19 which has spread all over the world has begun to go around, and the path toward the end of the disease is starting to be seen, PIC is looking ahead and taking a new step toward the next 25 years. Whilst still valuing PIC's origins, I wish to challenge new initiatives to expand business between Japan and the Pacific Island Countries/Territories in cooperation with the people concerned.
