ヘンリー・プナ太平洋諸島フォーラム事務局長に代わりまして、PIC設立25周年に対して、PIC所長およびスタッフの皆様に心よりお祝い申し上げます。また、このような重要な節目を迎えるにあたり、太平洋諸島フォーラム事務局（PIFS）としてこれまで協力できたことを光栄に思います。今回、PIC設立25周年記念本の中で示されているPICの歴史や設立の経緯、日本と島嶼地域との関係構築、そしてPICとの協力関係など、PIFSやフォーラム加盟国にとっても大変重要な指標であると思います。 PICは、日本と太平洋島嶼国間の貿易、投資、観光を促進する目的で設立されました。 20年以上にわたり、貿易・ビジネスの競争力を強化するため数々のイニシアチブを発揮し、その活動によって、日本の投資家やビジネス関係者に島嶼国地域を広く周知され、また競争の激しい日本市場に島嶼地域の企業が進出するための取り組みを支援してきました。中でも、毎年PICが編集している島嶼国と日本との貿易統計は、私たち島嶼地域の企業が日本市場にアクセスする際の重要な情報の一つになっています。さらに、日本で開催されるさまざまな貿易関連イベントや展示会（例えば毎年開催されるFOODEX JAPAN）へ島嶼国企業の参加を呼びかけ、かつその支援をしてくれることは称賛に値し、これまで支援を受けた民間企業は、コスメティック、文化・芸術、アパレル、食品、飲料関連企業など多岐にわたっています。 過去20年以上にわたり構築してきた日本政府とPICとの協力関係をさらに強固なものとし、島嶼国の願望に応えられるように共に取り組んでいくことを楽しみにしております。 太平洋から心をこめて。 On behalf of the Secretary General, Mr. Henry Tuakeu Puna, I would like to convey our warmest congratulations to the management and staff of Pacific Islands Centre on the auspicious occasion in celebration of its 25-year anniversary. It is indeed a significant milestone and one that the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat is honored to have supported during this time. To mark such an important milestone, a commemorative publication in dedication of Pacific Islands Centre is an important showpiece for both Pacific Islands Centre and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and our Members. It captures and documents the history and significance of the establishment of PIC and its relationship with the Pacific, and the collaborative efforts and support over the years. PIC was founded on aims to promote trade, investment and tourism between our Forum Island Countries and Japan. In over those two decades PIC has worked tirelessly and supported the region in a number of initiatives to enhance trade and business competitiveness – this has been in promoting the region to investors and stakeholders in Japan, and supporting the region's efforts to penetrate the highly competitive Japanese market. A flagship initiative of PIC is the compilation of trade statistics between the Pacific Island Countries and Japan. Gathering statistical information is no easy feat and the Forum Secretariat commends PIC for spearheading this initiative which has proved useful in our policy work on regional trade. Supporting Pacific businesses to help them access the Japanese market and gather appropriate market intelligence is a fundamental role of PIC. In this it has worked with Pacific SMEs in various ways, but largely been focused on: business to business connections with local vendors and distributors; and enabling participation of Pacific businesses in various trade events hosted in Japan – for example the annual FOODEX JAPAN exhibition. Businesses that have benefitted from such support have included those in the cosmetics sector, cultural and creative industries and apparel, and food and beverages. Like any good book, this also captures a series of images of PIC and Pacific journey, and those represent time stamps and a thousand words. We look forward to future engagements with the Government of Japan and PIC as we endeavour to meet and support the aspirations for our peoples – and do so in the same spirit that has helped our relationship flourish for the past 20 plus years.
